Medical Foster Home

The Cheyenne VAMC’s Medical Foster Home Program (MFH) is an alternative to long-term care living environments.  The program provides certified foster homes to Veterans who prefer a home environment to nursing or group home care.  These homes provide room, board, personal care and supervision to Veterans who do not require hospital care, but because of psychosocial health conditions, are not able to live independently and have no suitable family resources to provide the needed care. To be eligible for the program the Veteran must have a serious mental illness such as dementia, schizophrenia or post traumatic stress disorder and be unable to live independently without support and supervision.

The Medical Foster Home Program works by matching a veteran who would like to live in a MFH with a VA approved family & home in the community. A caregiver will provide the Veteran or Veterans with personal care assistance and support with their activities of daily living.  The VA will help support the care through the VA’s Mental Health Intensive Case Management Team (MHICM).  The MHICM Homecare team will provide services to the veteran in the foster home and will proved support to the caretaker to help the Veteran be successful in the home.  In return for the care, the veteran compensates the caregiver directly.   Veterans who served during war time may be eligible for additional compensation to help with the cost of the care.
