About the Program

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, speech language pathology, audiology, and chiropractic care.  We provide care in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including our Community Living Center for rehabilitation and long-term care.

Physical Therapy

The Physical Therapy department provides individualized assessments and treatments that reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.  Our physical therapists work with individuals who are admitted to the hospital, the transitional care unit and the Community Living Center.  We provide specialized out-patient rehabilitative services for individuals with a wide variety of orthopedic and neurological disorders. In addition, we offer women’s health/pelvic floor treatment, aquatics, and trigger point dry needling.  We have physical therapy clinics at the Cheyenne VA (Main Facility), as well, as the Loveland Clinic.

Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapy department provides individualized assessments and treatments that promote the ability to complete functional daily skills, move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability.  Our occupational therapists work with individuals on an outpatient basis, as well as those who are admitted to the hospital, the transitional care unit, the Community Living Center, and Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC).  Through our multidisciplinary approach, we provide specialized out-patient rehabilitative services for individuals with low vision, spinal cord injury, those in need of custom and power wheelchairs, and individuals with traumatic brain injury.  Occupational Therapy is currently offered at the main facility in Cheyenne as well as the Loveland Clinic.

Recreational Therapy

The Recreation Therapy department utilizes leisure education, therapy, and recreation participation to promote overall health and well-being.  Our recreation therapists work with individuals who are admitted to the hospital, the RRTP unit, the transitional care unit, the Community Living Center, as well as outpatient whole health programs.  The recreation therapists are part of a multidisciplinary approach, that provides specialized in-patient rehabilitative services for our patients in the Community Living Center to improve physical function; enhance well-being; increase or maintain independence; develop healthy coping techniques; enhance or maintain social involvement; and manage pain and stress.

Speech Language Pathology

The Speech Therapy department provides individualized assessments and treatments that promote the ability to communicate effectively with family, medical staff and family members, and to restore functional swallowing.  Our speech therapist works with individuals who are admitted to the hospital, the transitional care unit and the Community Living Center.  As a part of a multidisciplinary approach, we provide specialized out-patient rehabilitative services for individuals with traumatic brain injury, language disorders, and swallowing disorders.  The speech language pathologist is based in Cheyenne with a weekly on-site clinic at the Loveland Clinic, as well as Tele-Health screening/treatment clinics.

Audiology

The Audiology department provides comprehensive hearing evaluations as well as balance and vestibular evaluations on both an outpatient and inpatient basis.  Treatment includes provision of hearing aids and assistive devices as needed.  Veterans with a variety of hearing difficulties are served, including those with noise-induced hearing loss, age-related hearing loss, tinnitus, central auditory processing disorders, and those with external, middle, and inner ear disease. On-site clinics are located at the Cheyenne Medical Center, Ft. Collins, and Loveland Clinics.  We also offer Tele-Health services at the Rawlins and Sidney Clinics.
